DAY 1: Tragedy
At approximately 11:00 a.m., Elizabeth Ann Kelly, 56, and her daughter Emily Ann Kelly, 30, set off from Elizabeth's house in Allenspark, Colo. on a horseback ride. They rode along State Highway 7 to Bunce School Road.
They encountered ice on Bunce School Road, and decided to move off the shoulder to avoid the hazard. Liz's horse stepped into a barbed wire fence that was lying on the ground. The horse's hoof became entangled in the wire, the horse spooked and ran.
The surprise dislodged Liz from her saddle so that she leaned from the left side of her horse. Before she could regain her seat, the horse ran past a tree on its left side. Liz turned her face to the right to avoid impact, but could not. She struck the tree first with the left side of her face, then her left arm and the left side of her rib cage. The impact completely removed her from the horse and sent her spinning through the air.
Emily dismounted and ran to her mother. She found that Liz was unconscious and not breathing. Emily tried to resuscitate her, but Liz remained unconscious. Emily ran to a house at the entrance of Bunce School Road. She called 9-1-1, then returned to the scene of the accident.
Liz was transported by Flight For Life helicopter to St. Anthony Central Hospital's level one trauma unit in Denver. She was taken immediately to Trauma Room 10, reserved for the most critical patients.
Her injuries included: nasal fractures, fractured skull on the left side of her face extending to the left eye orbit, intracerebral hematoma behind the orbit of her left eye, damaged left optical nerve, broken right clavicle, several fractures in her left arm both above and below the elbow, broken ribs on the left side, ruptured spleen, collapsed left lung, and lacerated liver.
Liz's circle of friends and family extends around the world. Her children are Jason, Emily, Kevin, Colleen, Karen, Daniel, and Charlie, all of whom visit her frequently in the hospital. Her well-wishers include people in Estes Park and Allenspark, relatives in the western United States, and friends in Japan, where Jason lives. Emily has moved home to take care of the youngest brothers, Daniel and Charlie, while Jason stays near the hospital and spends most of each day watching over Liz and meeting with medical personnel.
