DAY 20: Slow Progress
The oxygen level in Mom's blood is stabilizing. Her doctors were able to reduce the oxygen level of her respirator, along with its pressure levels, as they try to ramp down to getting her completely off the respirator.
Just this week, she's started opening her eyes, focusing on us, and even trying to give a slight smile. When I asked her, "Can you hear me?" she nodded. She usually slips back into unconsciousness within a minute or so, but these brief glimpses of her are wonderful gifts to all of us who've spent so much time at her bedside with no response. That's what made Emily and me smile in this photo.
She's receiving 65 cc of liquid food through a stomach tube, which is a big improvement over the intravenous nourishment she received for the first two weeks. Her body is slowly waking up!
