DAY 22: Big Progress
Today was very encouraging.
As usual on a weekday, the doctors came on rounds this morning at about 9:30.
When Dr. Heit spoke to Mom, she opened her eyes for him.
Dr. Heit asked if she could hear him and she nodded her head. Then he asked if she could give a thumbs-up sign with her right hand, and she did. All of the doctors said "great!" He asked if she could do it with her left hand. She tried, but all of the damage in her left arm kept her from succeeding. She did move the arm a little, though. Finally, he asked her to wiggle her toes, and she did. I've never seen the doctors so happy. At last, some success!
Later, the day got even better when we received another package from Japan, this one from friends in Sano, where I live. You may recall the 1,000 cranes Mom received from Takako on Day 19. Well, now we have 2,000 cranes, thanks to another team of well-wishers.
We hung them next to the other set of 1,000 on an IV stand at the head of Mom's bed. It feels good to have 2,000 cranes watching over her when we're away. What wonderful friends Mom has in Japan.
Even the heavens seemed to celebrate. Here's tonight's sunset over the Yaffe House, where I returned for the night with hope in my heart.
