DAY 27: Pneumonia

Mom suffered another setback today, although it appears to be minor.

On rounds, the doctors told me that they'd discovered significant fluid in her lungs on recent x-rays. Dr. Hodgin suspected pneumonia and decided to perform a bronchoscopy to get a better look at Mom's trouble.

She confirmed that Mom has pneumonia in her right lung and pleural effusion beside her left lung. She and other doctors decided to change Mom's antibiotic treatment, effective this afternoon.

Mom remained heavily sedated and quiet throughout the day. Tonight, Emily's boyfriend Chris came and read passages from the Bible to Mom. Before he returned home, he lent me his Bible. I returned to Mom's room and resumed reading from where he left off.

Let's hope the new antibiotics work.
