DAY 43: 50/50 Chance
This morning's rounds were the worst yet. Mom's doctors give her just a 50/50 chance of survival, at best.
The reason is that her lungs are suffering from ARDS, which is making them form scar tissue, which can't absorb oxygen. It's tight, too, and is constricting her lungs, preventing them from opening enough to breathe normally. At the same time, she's fighting pneumonia. The doctors are nearly out of antibiotics to try. At this point, it's up to Mom's lungs to start doing their job. So far, they haven't.
If Mom doesn't survive, the end could come quickly. Therefore, I've called distant relatives to give the news. If they want to see Mom, now is the time. We are hoping for the best, but have been given a picture of the worst.
As the doctors said, this is the real deal. There are even odds of her dying. Our family is pulling together for even more time in her room than we've been spending.
I'll provide details as they become available.
